Zverev Wins ATP 500 Debut in Munich and the BMW iX M70

The BMW Open by Bitpanda, making its first appearance as an ATP 500 event, culminated in a dream final on Easter Sunday. Alexander Zverev and Ben Shelton, the tournament’s top two seeds, faced off on a packed Centre Court with over 6,000 fans. Zverev delivered a commanding performance, triumphing 6-2, 6-2 in just 71 minutes. For Germany’s number one, it was his 24th ATP Tour victory overall and his third BMW Open title, drawing him level with compatriot Philipp Kohlschreiber. In recognition of his achievement—and on his 28th birthday—Zverev received the all-electric BMW iX M70.

Christian Ach, Head of BMW Germany, praised the event’s success, saying, “Congratulations to Alexander Zverev, who deservedly won the title at the BMW Open by Bitpanda, as well as the all-electric BMW iX M70.” He underscored the tournament’s readiness for the 500 category and highlighted the debut of the FUTURE ACES programme, which facilitated 361 coaching hours for disadvantaged children and youths. Every ace served during the competition generated an hour of tennis instruction, introducing participants to the sport and providing a supportive environment for personal growth.

Zverev took charge of the final from the outset, breaking Shelton’s serve early and dictating the pace with near-flawless shot-making. While Shelton struggled to find any break opportunities, Zverev’s relentless intensity ensured Shelton never gained momentum. Looking back on his narrow quarterfinal escape against Tallon Griekspoor, Zverev thanked the fans for “bringing him back” and emphasised the tournament organisers’ commitment to continuous improvement.

The winner’s all-electric BMW iX M70 was ceremoniously driven onto the court by 2020 US Open champion Dominic Thiem. Its “Frozen Deep Grey” finish, enhanced performance, and maximum range of up to 701 kilometres underlined BMW’s commitment to eco-friendly mobility. Reflecting this focus on sustainability, the BMW courtesy car fleet featured locally emission-free vehicles, including the BMW i7, BMW i5, BMW iX, and BMW iX1.

Though Zverev brought home the singles trophy, German hopes for a second title were dashed in the doubles final as Swedish André Göransson and Dutch Sem Verbeek defeated Kevin Krawietz and Tim Pütz 6-4, 6-4. Meanwhile, British player Alfie Hewett notched a remarkable double victory at the Allianz Para Trophy, overcoming Gustavo Fernandez in the singles final before capturing the doubles championship alongside Gordon Reid.
