BMW will expand TwinPower Turbo package to 4-, 3-cylinder engines

BMW announces the expansion of the use of its TwinPower Turbo package to 4- and 3-cylinder engines, both gasoline and diesel. This package was introduced back in 2009. It includes a combination of the twin-scroll turbocharging, direct gasoline injection and fully variable Valvetronic valve management systems in a 6-cylinder 3.0-liter gasoline engine used by the 5 Series GT midsized model.

BMW showcased the first application of the TwinPower Turbo package in a 4-cylinder engine, the 2.0-liter gasoline unit used in the X1 medium SUV at the Geneva Motor Show.

BMW has decided on this expansion to cut average carbon dioxide emissions another 25% by 2020. For example, the BMW X1 equipped with the TwinPower Turbo package has a fuel consumption of 7.9 liter/100km and carbon dioxide emissions of 183 grams/ Km. This data is 16% lower than a larger displacement engine offering the same performance.

No announcements have been made about which new  family of 3-cylinder engines will get the TwinPower Turbo package.
