BMW recalls 1 Series cars in the US due to fire risk

BMW AG recalled a number of vehicles due to defects that put the car at risk of fire. The US federal auto-safety regulator ordered the recall of the 2008 to 2011 1 Series BMW cars that had a defect in the front-seat safety-belt retractors. This defect can lead to ignition of fire according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

No official number of vehicles for recall was released. But this was done in line with the US Senate’s legislation that focused on the increase of auto-safety regulations.

BMW general manager for safety engineering Jan Urbahn, sent a reply letter to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration on June 8. He said that only significantly severe road accidents can lead to fire risk of these BMW vehicles. This ensures that in regular circumstances, these BMW cars are still safe. But due to stricter regulations, the recall will still be made.
