A Rare 1980 BMW M1 on sale for $250,000

Back in 1980, the BMW M1 was unveiled as the first car created independently by the BMW Motorsport Division. It was a breakthrough race car which was also good for street driving — the most dynamic car in the market by then. Before it’s release, this unique project had to go through so many administrative hurdles. Nonetheless, it is the one and only BMW supercar ever produced.

Hand-built between 1978 and 1981, the BMW M1 was designed by Giugiaro based on the 1972 BMW Turbo show car. It has a 3.5-liter straight-six engine capable of 277 horsepower, speeds in excess of 160 mph, and acceleration from 0-62 mph in 5.6 seconds. The redline came at 7,000 rpm. There were only 456 production units ever built. This, making the 1980 BMW M1 one of BMW’s rarest models.
