[VIDEO] BMW M2 Beats Porsche Cayman GTS: MotorTrend’s Review

MotorTrend’s executive editor, Mac Morrison, and writer Scott Evans tested the 2023 BMW M2 against the 2023 Porsche 718 Cayman GTS 4.0. Comparing their similar performance stats, they evaluated the cars’ quarter-mile time of 11.8 seconds and 0 to 60 mph acceleration in under 3.5 seconds. Despite differing design philosophies, the BMW M2, with its four seats, offers a blend of comfort and sportiness for everyday use. Meanwhile, the Cayman GTS delivers a purer, more raw driving experience tailored to racetrack enthusiasts.

MotorTrend notes that the Cayman must maximize its torque despite the BMW’s slightly heavier build and extra rear seat—features absent in the Porsche. However, they found that driving the BMW M2 at a slower pace heightened the excitement. It’s one of the most closely matched comparisons they’ve encountered, with both cars earning accolades for various performance metrics during testing.

In many instances, the BMW M2 proved superior for enjoyable driving experiences. Mac Morrison commented that it was one of the closest comparison tests he had experienced in his 22-year career, emphasizing the intense rivalry.

The Porsche appeals to enthusiasts craving hard-driving experiences, while the BMW M2 impresses with immediate, accessible thrills. Morrison concludes that the BMW M2 offers unmatched power, personality, and excitement, making it more enjoyable for daily driving and beyond, while the Porsche provides a specialized driving experience. The BMW M2 boasts powerful output and a dynamic driving style, but its larger size results in a heavier feel and stiffer ride.
