The BMW i8 vehicle has just been revealed. It is powered by a high performance 3-cylinder petrol engine (164 kW) placed in the rear and an electric motor (limited to 96 kW) placed in the front. This delivers a total torque of 550 Nm (300Nm petrol engine + 250 Nm electric motor). It has three driving modes – electric, petrol, or both engines at once. Weighing 1,480 kg, the vehicle can sprint to 0-100kph (62mph) in 4.6 seconds. Top speed is at 250kph. With a 2.7 L/100km fuel economy and 35km pure electric range, this four-seater is definitely a breakthrough in sustainability. The BMW i8 is expected to make its market launch in 2014.
