This is the first time that a BMW X1 Hybrid prototype has been spotted by spy photographers. Since 2009, rumors were already circulating that BMW will make a hybrid drive train for the E84 X1. Now these rumors come to life as these photos are released. The hybrid sticker gives away the identity of this car.

I sure hope that BMW is developing a hybrid version of their fantastic new twin-turbo 4, that is in the 3,5, X1, and probably several others in 2013 (1, X3, Z).  It would be way more versatile and get better fuel economy than the in-line 6 twin-turbo hybrid, which ultimately gets very marginally better city fuel economy (only a couple of gallons/mile better).   I ASSUME that this is what BMW is working on, though I have never seen anyone write about it. It doesn’t make sense to squeeze the US-only six cylinder X1 with a hybrid. It’s just too much for realistic everyday drivers (even performance oriented ones), especially for the cost and the miniscule city fuel economy improvement. Plus, would it even FIT under the hood?
