BMW and Rimac Unite for Future Electric Innovations

BMW has entered into a groundbreaking partnership with Rimac Automobili, a company renowned for its advanced electric vehicle technology, to enhance the development and production of high-voltage battery systems. This collaboration marks a significant step for BMW as it gears up for its future line of battery-electric vehicles, particularly slated for release in the latter half of the 2020s.

Rimac, although only 15 years into its journey, has already established itself as a pivotal player in the electric vehicle sector, holding partnerships with major automotive giants like Porsche, Aston Martin, and even Ferrari. Their expertise in high-performance electric vehicle technology has positioned Rimac at the forefront of innovation, which BMW plans to leverage in its upcoming projects.

BMW termed the partnership a ‘long-term relationship,’ indicating that the impacts of this collaboration will be significant and enduring. According to BMW, Rimac will transition from focusing on niche, high-performance solutions to a high-volume Tier 1 supplier capable of delivering large-scale projects that adhere to the highest automotive standards.

While BMW is on the verge of launching its highly anticipated ‘Neue Klasse’ models, which will feature BMW’s sixth-generation eDrive technology, the collaboration with Rimac will focus on separate future models. This move underlines BMW’s commitment to innovation and its strategy to diversify the technological underpinnings of its electric vehicles.

Looking forward, there is speculation that Rimac’s influence may extend to BMW’s performance models, potentially introducing quad-motor layouts—a technology Rimac has already perfected with its Nevera model and the Pininfarina Battista. Such advancements could revolutionise the performance parameters of BMW’s electric vehicles, possibly culminating in a quad-motor electric M3 by the decade’s end.
