[VIDEO] Witness the 2023 BMW X7 Diesel’s Acceleration Prowess

After the 2018 model year, BMW stopped selling diesel engines in the US, citing low customer demand and tougher regulations. The oil burner is still available in many parts of the world. In Australia, CarExpert journalists recently tested the X7 xDrive40d, featuring its impressive 23-inch wheels. The new-for-2023 M60i has dominated acceleration tests. Meanwhile, this is a unique chance to witness the diesel full-size SUV in action.

The Munich-based company claims that the luxobarge can accelerate from 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) in 5.9 seconds. But the performance is purposefully overstated in a true BMW manner. Showing plenty of in-gear punch, the 50–75 mph (80–120 km/h) sprint required 3.9 seconds. As for the fancy mastodon, it needed 5.44 seconds to complete the task.

CarExpert also aims to determine the stopping distance of the X7 xDrive40d from 62 mph (100 km/h). It’s impressive to observe that a three-row SUV weighing a massive 2,490 kilograms (5,489 pounds) stopped completely in just 36.49 meters. It also decelerated in just 2.6 seconds. The Australians also floored the throttle while going backwards for fun, reaching speeds up to 22 mph (36 km/h).

The diesel X7 offers a generous 720 Newton-meters (531 pound-feet) of torque from a 3.0-litre inline-six. This made it one of the most powerful BMWs with a combustion engine money can buy. The insane quad-turbo M50d version of the Bavarian brand has been discontinued. However, few people will miss it because the xDrive40d is more than adequate. After accounting for the mild hybrid system, its 3.0-litre has 352 horsepower (259 kW).

Despite its size and weight, the diesel engine delivers powerful torque and efficient fuel consumption. In 2023, diesel may seem outdated, but BMW remains committed to ICE. The EV charging infrastructure will not be universally available in the coming years, justifying their decision.
