BMW’s next M3 is lining up for a major powertrain shift, with an all-electric performance saloon expected to debut next year. The big story is what sits underneath. BMW has talked up a dedicated control unit for driving dynamics—nicknamed the “Heart of Joy”—designed to react in milliseconds and manage traction with far finer accuracy than a conventional set-up. Pair that with four electric motors, one driving each wheel, and you’ve got the building blocks for serious torque vectoring, sharper turn-in and cleaner exits when the road starts to knot up.

Drivers who want a more traditional feel should also be catered for. BMW is expected to allow the front axle to be decoupled, giving a rear-driven mode for a more adjustable balance, while simulated shift steps and a crafted sound profile aim to add extra feedback without turning the cabin into a gimmick. Official performance figures are still under wraps, but the engineering direction suggests this M3 is being developed to feel precise, planted and confidence-inspiring at speed.
