The BMW iX3 ranked first in the recent Thatcham Research and Euro NCAP-assisted driving tests. With seven new cars participating, five of them are EVs, including the Bavarian model. This test is to encourage responsible marketing and safe adoption of the technology. The assisted driving ratings came into effect in October 2020.

Cars undergo the following tests: level of assistance, driver involvement, and safety support given by the car’s assisted driving systems. To win, an ideal system must give both support and active driver involvement. The BMW iX3 tops the list with 169 points. The Ford Mustang Mach-E and the Cupra Formentor followed.

However, the Toyota Yaris and Vauxhall Mokka-e received “entry-level” ratings for their Assisted Driving system. Assisted driving technology can be very useful, especially on long highway journeys as stated by Matthew Avery, Thatcham Research Chief Strategic Research Officer.

Avery stressed that the correct balance is between providing significant assistance and ensuring drivers’ obligations. The team has seen the dangerous consequences of drivers who believe their work is secondary. This happened on Tesla’s Autopilot on the highways throughout the world. Further, the BMW iX3 is the only car to receive a very good rating for its performance. In other words, it performed well in collision avoidance scenarios. The in-vehicle video tutorials played a big part in the iX3 receiving a rating of 85 percent for driver involvement.
