BMW investing USD100,000,000 to build X3 Knockdown Kits

The new 2011 BMW X3 is a very successful vehicle in terms of sales for the BMW Group. Over the last month, BMW has already sold 5,982 X3 units all over the world; boasting of a 95% increase from the X3 sales last year for the same period.

At the beginning of the current week, BMW announced their plants to invest an additional USD100 million into its South Carolina operation due to a high-demand for X3 knocked-down “kits” intended for export. The investment will be spent primarily on the facility and productivity. The markets where the kits will be exported to has not been announced yet, but most likely, it will be sold to markets that have very high duties on finished product imports.

This decision to export knocked-down X3 kits is purely a business decision according to BMW Manufacturing spokesman Max Metcalf. The X3 kits will feature body parts built in Greer and with final packaging by the Syncreon logistics firm in its Duncan facility. Approximately 4,000 semi-knocked-down painted bodies will be shipped this year as kits according to BMW.

BMW Group has already invested $750 million in the South Carolina plant for the X3 production.
