The 2026 BMW i4 carves out its place as one of the most polished electric saloons on the market, pairing a swooping coupe-style roofline with the practicality of a hatchback liftback. Buyers can choose from three flavours: the rear-wheel-drive eDrive40 producing 335 bhp, the all-paw xDrive40 delivering 396 bhp, and the range-topping M60 unleashing a meaty 593 bhp. Each model draws from an 84 kWh battery pack and supports DC fast charging at up to 200 kW, with the eDrive40 stretching its range to an estimated 333 miles on a single charge.
For the 2026 model year, BMW gives the i4 a meaningful technical refresh. Updated silicon carbide inverters boost efficiency and add roughly 12 to 15 miles of driving range without lifting the sticker. The previous M50 trim now wears the M60 badge, gaining an extra 56 bhp to total 593 bhp. Fresh additions to the options sheet include Glass Controls for the interior switchgear, while the Parking Assistant Professional Package now bundles in a dash cam. The Shadowline Package adds black mirror housings and upgraded brakes, and BMW has retired the eDrive35 from the range.
On the outside, the i4 Gran Coupe leans into the styling cues of its petrol-powered 4 Series sibling. A sloping roofline sweeps into the liftback tailgate, while slim LED headlights and a matte silver honeycomb kidney grille announce its identity. The body stretches 188.5 inches long, 72.9 inches wide, and sits 57.0 inches tall, lending it a low and athletic stance. Standard 18-inch two-tone alloys feature on the eDrive40 and xDrive40, while the M60 rolls on 19-inch wheels with optional 20-inch designs. Frameless doors reinforce the sporty profile, and upper trims can be fitted with laser rear lights for a sharper signature after dark.
Step inside, and the cabin makes a confident statement. A curved display houses a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster alongside a 14.9-inch touchscreen running BMW’s iDrive 8.5 software, complete with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and the brand’s Intelligent Personal Assistant. SensaTec upholstery wraps the sport seats as standard, with Vernasca leather available for buyers chasing a more traditional luxury feel. Waterfall-style ambient lighting flows across the dashboard and door panels, while a flat-bottom steering wheel adds a sporting touch. Boot capacity ranges from 10 to 16.6 cubic feet, and the 40/20/40 split-folding rear bench opens up additional load space when needed.
Behind the wheel, the i4 delivers the composed suspension, responsive steering, and refinement BMW drivers expect, even without a combustion engine humming away under the bonnet. Fast charging tops up the battery with 90 miles of range in just 10 minutes, making longer journeys properly manageable. Rear headroom does suffer slightly thanks to that sloping roofline, and the M60 sees its range drop noticeably when wearing the 20-inch alloys. Even so, for drivers who value engagement, premium cabin materials, and a polished electric driving experience, the 2026 BMW i4 stands as one of the most well-rounded options in the compact electric luxury saloon segment.
