Greenville News reports that BMW expects the newly expanded Spartanburg plant to run at near capacity in 2011 to meet the strong demand for the BMW X5 and the production of the new X3 Sports Activity Vehicles. The recent $750 million expansion of the Spartanburg plant created new production lines for the 2011 BMW X3. According to the same report, BMW is planning to hire additional 1,600 contractual workers. Once hired, the total workers on that plant will be 7,600. BMW expects the plant to produce about 240,000 vehicles next year.
Aside from being one of the most efficient factories for BMW, the Spartanburg plant also significantly helps the economy in that region. Because of the plant’s efficiency, the prices of BMW vehicles made there are kept low. One good example would be the use of landfill gases to provide for almost half of the plant’s power. It allows BMW to save on electricity costs. All these factors in the production process contributes to how high or low the vehicle is priced.
