Is This Upgraded BMW 2002tii Worth $71,000?

Would you pay $71,000 for a 1974 BMW 2002tii?

In hearts of sports car lovers, there is a special place for BMW 2002. It was the first sport sedan, or the first one to become popular at least.

The first edition of the car came out in 1966. It featured a 2.0-liter four-cylinder M10 engine and made 101 HP. The significant improvement was done with the 2002tii model that came out in 1971 and made 130 HP.

A particular 2002tii model from 1974 was restored, modified and set for the auction at Bring a Trailer. The upgrades include Suspension Techniques springs, Biltein shocks, sway bars, rubber bushings, period Recaro seats, and a Nardi wood steering wheel. The cost of work done on this 2002tii was around $55,000 in the end.

So, is the BMW 2002tii worth $71,000?

Being a classical model and one of the sports car legends, a typical BMW 2002tii usually sells for around $19,000. Not this one – the final auction price was $71,000, which is a lot of money for a car like this. Why do we think that?

Well, first of all, the upgrades featured on the car are not the ones that will vastly improve functionality, prolong life and generally be desired by every future owner. The investments could have been made much wiser. Also, if we know that this model can be bought for less than $20,000, there is so much that can be done for the remaining $50,000 in order to get a fully functioning, unique and personalized vehicle.

So, while the car looks very cool and has some cool features, we feel like the price is a bit over the top. All this can be done for less money for sure. But in case you just happen to have $71,000 lying around waiting for the opportunity to be spent, it’s a good buy. If you don’t, better investments are out there.
