BMW and Epic Games celebrated last week their four-year-long of working together since joining forces in 2016. Their goal was to work on the newest technologies available in the automotive production industry for development efforts. It was also that time BMW began using Epic Game’s Unreal Engine to create new and innovative development methods and tools. Since then, it’s a part of the research and development of BMW.

The Unreal Engine drastically changed BMW’s design and engineering with its virtual reality models that are so realistic. This means that they can shape and modify their cars without really needing to build them. One of the first cars to have been developed using this game engine is the BMW iX. BMW engineers and designers can immediately create 3D renderings that include light effects and light reflections on different materials, among other things. Furthermore, the Unreal Engine allows real-time user experience and implementation of renderings at a very early development stage.

BMW models such as the G20 3 Series is a product of the Unreal Engine’s developmental method. The German automaker used virtual reality for the individual workstations for the car’s production to test new work and manufacturing processes in a realistic 3D environment. This method allowed the company to adjust some processes beforehand, ensuring everything is as efficient as possible. The same goes now for the upcoming i4.

On top of it all, the Unreal Engine offers BMW customers to enjoy the luxury of virtual reality tests. BMW and Epic Game’s team-up created the “Emotion Virtual Experience” that virtually allows a first-hand experience on a vehicle. EVE offers to view with VR glasses so customers can see a detailed 3D representation of any BMW and MINI model they configured. They can also change designs and colors in real-time, to make sure they get the perfect combination for them. The EVE comes available via 6,400 stations at more than 2,400 BMW dealerships and branches worldwide.
