Audi is recently topping the charts due to their Virtual Cockpit display — a fully high-definition screen that can provide a wealth of different information and various different views in all Audi models, not high-end ones. It not only looks great, it works amazingly well too. In comparison, BMW’s display interface is already starting to feel and look dated. This is especially true for the 3 Series and 4 Series. Now BMW has given both of these models the latest version of iDrive and a new Multifunction Instrument Display.
This new Multifunction Instrument Display (MFID) will replace the usual gauge cluster in the 3 and 4 Series. There will no longer be a physical speedometer and tachometer. In place would be a single high-def display that changes depending on the mode of driving. It will show all the information that the driver needs to see.
Upon starting the car, the default is Comfort mode, which is typical for all BMWs. In this mode, the MFID will display a digital speedometer on the left and tachometer on the right. A small information display will be in the middle, which shows navigation and other information. In Sport mode however, the gauges turn red, the speedometer turns digital and the tachometer displays the current gear. Everything is displayed in a very crisp and clear manner so the driver won’t have a hard time using it even in high speeds. In ECO Pro mode, blue is the color scheme used. The speedometer looks traditional and is limited to 120 km/h (75 mph), while the tachomer turns into an efficiency gauge. This is mostly inspired by the gauge clusters of BMW hybrid cars.
