The BMW M1 Successor That Almost Became Reality

The automotive world nearly welcomed a groundbreaking addition to the BMW M lineup—a modern M1 successor that could have redefined electrified performance. Known internally as the i16, the car was based on the Vision M Next concept unveiled in 2019. Despite being 95 percent ready for production, BMW decided to pull the plug, leaving the car as an intriguing “what if” in the brand’s storied history.

The Vision M Next, designed as a spiritual successor to the iconic i8 and the legendary M1, promised more than just sleek looks. BMW envisioned a high-performance plug-in hybrid powered by a four-cylinder engine paired with electric motors, delivering over 600 horsepower. This setup would allow the car to accelerate from 0-62 mph in just 3.0 seconds, hit a top speed of 186 mph, and cover up to 62 miles on electric power alone under European testing standards. Development carried on through the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, with plans to release the car by 2022.

However, BMW’s priorities shifted. Faced with a choice between advancing the i16 or greenlighting the plug-in hybrid XM SUV, the company chose the latter. The XM, positioned as a performance flagship, debuted in 2022 but has struggled to resonate with enthusiasts, facing a decline in sales. Some speculate that its lukewarm reception underscores the missed potential of the i16 as a true M1 successor.

Although Vision M Next never reached the showroom floor, BMW’s passion for innovation remains alive. According to historian Steve Saxty, BMW designers continuously explore ideas for a modern M1. While there are no guarantees, the possibility of a genuine M1 successor lingers—a reminder that the brand’s pursuit of ultimate performance never truly rests.
