Many BMW enthusiasts who have driven almost every variation of the BMW M8, including the coupe, convertible, and grand coupe, never felt they lacked power. In fact, the M8 Gran Coupe ranks among the most ferocious vehicles they’ve ever driven, almost like experiencing teleportation. Despite this, G-Power deemed it necessary to add 200 horsepower, as demonstrated in a new AutoTopNL video. This extra boost turned the car into an absolute powerhouse.
The BMW M8 Competition Gran Coupe’s 4.4-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine generates a standard 617 horsepower. BMW asserts it hits 60 mph in 3.2 seconds, but it’s closer to 2.9 seconds. This factory-made, four-door powerhouse resembles a ballistic missile. So, what does an additional 200 horsepower achieve?
That’s precisely what it does—it transforms the M8’s rear tires into smoke. Out of the box, the M8 is a serious, fuss-free car that moves rapidly with minimal drama. Its exceptional stability and capability can make its intense acceleration and speed feel mundane. However, the G-Power-tuned version is a different story. Whether navigating turns or driving straight, it eagerly shreds its tires at a moment’s notice.
The added power makes it easy to break the rear tires loose. However, once that happens, it’s surprisingly simple to regain control. It could be due to a tuned suspension, ample mechanical grip, or intelligent power and differential software from G-Power. Despite the intense force shredding its rear tires, the car remains manageable.
Details about specific changes to the suspension or brakes are not available. We know the wheels, extended hood, and large rear wing are aesthetic enhancements. However, considering the car’s stock-like performance at high speeds, it’s likely the chassis has undergone significant modifications.
Racing a modified M8 Gran Coupe wouldn’t make sense, as it’s too large and heavy to be a track car. So, why the tuning? Perhaps the G-Power upgrades enhance the daily drive experience or fulfil a childhood fantasy. Ultimately, it’s up to the owner to decide if it’s worth the investment.
