[VIDEO] BMW M5 Challenges AMG GT 63 S E and Porsche Panamera in Drag Race

With the latest BMW 5 Series (G60) hitting the market, our gaze now turns to the forthcoming M5. The team at Carwow decided to set the stage for a thrilling comparison. They chose two high-performance sedans to race against the current superstar before its big debut next year. The Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S E-Performance and Porsche Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid pair their V8s with an electric motor. In contrast, the F90 relies solely on a traditional internal combustion engine.

In the meantime, how does the M5 stack up against these two rapid PHEVs? The G90-gen M5, also a plug-in hybrid V8, is somewhat outpaced. The Bavarian sedan in its Competition-spec outputs 625 horsepower and 750 Nm torque. It’s significantly below the AMG’s massive 843 horsepower and 1,400 Nm, and even the Porsche’s 700 horsepower and 870 Nm.

The M5, with its “old-school” V8 engine, is the lightest car in the mix. It weighs 1,865 kg, noticeably less than the hefty 2,305 kg GT and even chunkier 2,350 kg Panamera. We concede the M5 CS would have been a more fitting rival for the electrified sedans. Yet, as you’ll soon see, the Competition isn’t shying away from a challenge against the two big luxury powerhouses.

In every drag race, the Porsche lagged noticeably. The pattern continued in the subsequent rolling races, creating a tight contest between the BMW and AMG. In the 100 mph brake test, the lightest vehicle – the BMW – needed the least distance to halt completely. The AMG was next, with the Porsche again bringing up the rear.

Adding a Model S Plaid to these three for a showdown would be intriguing. It could hint at whether the reign of performance ICE vehicles is winding down. Powerful engine sports sedans might soon be history, giving way to zippy EVs. Besides the Tesla, we already see a few contenders, like the Porsche Taycan and Audi RS E-Tron GT.
