Given that the BMW M240i is the temporary flagship until the M2 comes, it’s easy to see why it has gotten the most media attention. The intermediate 230i has also been featured occasionally, but what about the entry-level model? Thankfully, the G42’s debut in the UK includes the 220i Coupe in a fresh photo gallery.
The famous “ace of bases” pictured here is not the most basic 2er available in the UK. Its 19-inch black wheels with M Sport brakes indicate that this 220i Coupe has the M Sport Package Pro. The Shadow Line (including headlights) and a black spoiler on the trunk lid are also included in the optional kit.
The 220d, with its mild-hybrid technology and twin-stage turbocharging, is another G42 model that is not available in the United States. It has 190 horsepower and 400 Nm (295 lb-ft) of torque, which allows it to sprint in 6.9 seconds and reach the same peak speed. Because it is an oil-burner, it is also significantly more economical than the 220i Coupe.
All three flavours of the new 2er, including the M240i, are equipped with an eight-speed Steptronic Sport gearbox. The M Performance model is xDrive-only, whilst the other models are RWD-only. All include launch control and a sprint feature, which provides a burst of speed while moving. When the driver pulls the left paddle for at least one second, it automatically shifts to the lowest practical gear.
