BMW iX Rules Premium EV Segment With Fresh Battery And Finesse

The BMW iX has surged to the front of the premium electric pack for 2025, seeing off newcomers such as the Lotus Emeya and the latest Porsche Taycan. Munich’s flagship SUV already impressed with its near-silent dual-motor drive and fluent chassis, yet a mid-cycle upgrade has widened the gap by adding meaningful real-world range without sacrificing performance.

Engineers focused on two core areas: efficiency and energy density. Revised power electronics, lower-resistance wheel bearings and updated cell chemistry trim consumption by an official eight per cent. At the same time, the new xDrive45 variant adopts a 94.8 kWh battery, replacing the outgoing xDrive40 pack. The result is a credible 320-mile touring capability in mixed British conditions, achieved even with purposeful motorway cruising and an 81 bhp jump in output.

Higher up the order, the xDrive60 benefits from an even larger battery, homologated for 435 miles under WLTP procedures, while the M70 gains sharper responses that belie the iX’s substantial footprint. Crucially, every version maintains the blend of supple ride and keen cornering that has become a hallmark of BMW’s electric architecture; air suspension and sophisticated damping isolate surface imperfections while still allowing confident direction changes on tighter B-roads.

Inside, the cabin feels more concept car than production model. Slim pillars, lounge-like seating trimmed in sustainable materials and a curved twin-screen layout create a light, modern ambience. Noise suppression is exemplary: wind whispers are muted by flush glazing, and tyre hum is reduced thanks to acoustic foam linings. Long journeys are dispatched with minimal fatigue, and the spacious rear bench plus generous boot ensure the iX serves family duties as readily as it devours mileage.

With its upgraded drivetrain, avant-garde cockpit and finely balanced dynamics, the BMW iX delivers an electric driving experience that combines serenity, swift progress and genuine long-distance usability. For drivers seeking the current pinnacle of battery-powered luxury SUVs, few machines offer a more complete package.
