Battle lines are drawn. The 2027 BMW 3 Series and the 2027 Mercedes-Benz C-Class are back for another round of the most famous rivalry in the executive saloon world. Both arrive freshly reworked, both chase the same buyers and both want to own your driveway. Only one can take the crown, though, and this time the fight is closer than ever.

Look at the BMW first. Sharp, angular lines and heavily sculpted surfaces borrow straight from the Vision Neue Klasse concept, giving it a lean, athletic stance. Standard 19-inch wheels fill the arches, with 20s on the options list. The Mercedes plays it cooler, evolving rather than reinventing, with an illuminated grille, three-pointed star daytime running lights and 18-inch rims as standard. Elegant, yes, but hardly daring.
Step inside and the gap widens. BMW’s Panoramic Vision iDrive hands you a 17.9-inch free-cut touchscreen plus a slim information strip along the base of the windscreen instead of a conventional driver display. Haptic touch pads sit on the steering wheel, and physical buttons are almost extinct. The C-Class keeps an 11.9-inch portrait touchscreen, a 12.3-inch driver display and plenty of proper switches. Tech fans versus traditionalists, then.

Both rivals lean on mild-hybrid help. Mercedes offers four-cylinder turbos from the 174hp C200 to the 255hp C300, while the C400 e 4MATIC plug-in hybrid peaks at 389hp. BMW matches the C300 with the 255hp 330 and 330 xDrive. Then the M350 pounces with a 3.0-litre straight-six, 437hp, all-wheel drive and a Drift Moment function that sends power rearwards. Game on.
So who wins? The BMW does, because it is bolder, more athletic and far braver inside, while the M350 is the closest thing to an M3 in the whole range. The C-Class still makes a superb case for anyone craving a quiet, comfortable and luxurious saloon. Its estate version also arrives sooner. Mercedes soothes, but BMW snarls.
