The BMW M8 Gran Coupe has a less-than-impressive exhaust note despite its powerful performance. Even the phenomenal M5 CS has this issue, as with every other BMW M car powered by a V8. For whatever reason, they just don’t have a pleasant sound. But the engineers at Milltek appear to have devised a workable answer.
Thanks to its dual turbochargers, the stock output of the S63’s 4.4-litre V8 engine is 617 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque. This is a massive motor. Despite this, the audio in Milltek’s video suggests that it’s relatively mild. Even though there is a slight grumble around the redline, the rest of the rev range is pretty muted and unremarkable. It’s a shame, considering the engine is otherwise fantastic. The M8 Gran Coupe is so quick that it could theoretically teleport you, so it should sound the part.
The Milltek Sports cat-back, OPF deletion exhaust modifies the tone to be more commensurate with the vehicle’s power and distinction. The full-beans system makes the car sound much more aggressive than the standard setup, even in the comfort mode (the exhaust is valved and adapts to the selected drive mode).
When you put it into sport mode, it becomes even more agitated. If anything, the exhaust makes more of a farty noise in sport mode than I’d prefer. However, many clients appreciated why Milltek implemented this feature. If anything, the farts and pops on the exhaust make it sound even better than before. The new version is much more exciting without being annoyingly loud. It starts deep and burbly, but the sound becomes raspier as the engine speed increases. Despite its unknown price tag, the M8 Gran Coupe’s Milltek system makes the car’s exhaust note as exotic as its exterior design.
