MINI Celebrates 25 Dynamic Years On The Road With BMW Group

The modern MINI has officially cruised past a remarkable milestone, with 2026 marking a full quarter of a century since the first BMW Group-produced example rolled off the Oxford production line. Twenty-five years on, the brand has cemented its place as a genuine automotive icon, combining heritage engineering with modern innovation and the unmistakable go-kart driving feel that has steered it into the hearts of millions of motorists worldwide. From zipping through bustling city streets to cruising across the silver screen, MINI has carved out a unique space in everyday motoring life, blending compact British character with premium BMW Group engineering to create a formula that keeps on winning.

The original Mini story began back in 1959, when Sir Alec Issigonis revolutionised small-car design with his visionary blend of space efficiency, front-wheel-drive layout and genuine driving enjoyment. The classic Mini rapidly transcended its original practical brief, becoming a motorsport hero during the 1960s under the Cooper banner and cementing its reputation as a machine that served up authentic motoring fun in a wonderfully compact package. Over the decades that followed, the Mini became deeply woven into popular culture, embraced by artists, designers, performers and everyday motorists as a singular expression of British character and creative flair on four wheels.

A decisive new chapter opened when BMW Group took the wheel, preserving the Mini heritage while opening up a sustainable path for the future. The first modern MINI engineered under the BMW Group umbrella rolled off the Plant Oxford line on 26th April 2001, kicking off a fresh era that fused the brand’s signature design DNA and nimble handling with modern technology and premium build quality. Jean-Philippe Parain, Head of MINI, reflected on the milestone by noting that the unmistakable British roots, distinctive design, go-kart feel and playful spirit have made MINI a global icon, with BMW Group expertise contributing to the brand’s ongoing success for more than a quarter century.

Today’s MINI range is the most extensive in the brand’s history, with five distinct models spanning fully electric powertrains and highly efficient combustion options. Customisation remains central to the ownership experience, with buyers able to specify everything from bonnet stripes to the famous multi-tone roof, made possible by innovative manufacturing techniques at the Oxford factory. Special editions have continued to set fresh trends, and 2026 sees the launch of the MINI Paul Smith Edition as a tribute to British design and playful elegance. In 2025, MINI notched up global sales of 288,290 vehicles, with battery electric variants accounting for more than a third of worldwide deliveries and exceeding 50 per cent in markets including the Netherlands, Turkey, Sweden and China. The John Cooper Works sub-brand also reached an all-time high with 25,630 units sold.

UK manufacturing continues to sit at the very heart of the MINI story, with Plant Oxford and BMW Group Plant Swindon together forming one of Britain’s most significant automotive production hubs. A combined workforce of more than 3,000 highly skilled staff produces around 800 MINIs a day, with a fresh example driving off the Oxford line every 78 seconds. Since 2001, a remarkable 4,671,664 MINIs have been assembled in Britain, with engines supplied since 2006 by BMW Group Plant Hams Hall in North Warwickshire, which has now produced more than 4.6 million units. Markus Grüneisl, CEO of BMW (UK) Manufacturing Ltd, described the 25-year milestone as a proud moment for everyone involved, praising the creativity, expertise and pride that the British workforce brings to the MINI production story every single day.
