BMW has never been shy about styling that splits opinion, and the last few years have proved it. As Neue Klasse approaches, though, the brand appears to be tightening its design discipline, starting with the next iX3. It still looks like a BMW from fifty paces, but the visual volume has been turned down in favour of cleaner surfacing and more confident proportions.

The headline change is the front-end treatment. The kidney grille is brought back into a more upright, structured shape, paired with slimmer lighting and a calmer bumper layout that looks designed around airflow and cooling rather than theatre. There’s less visual clutter, fewer fussy lines, and a more deliberate sense of stance—wide-set, planted, and neatly resolved.

That doesn’t mean BMW is suddenly going beige. The company seems to be aiming for a wider spread of personalities: cars like the iX3 that win buyers with balance and polish, alongside bolder outliers that wear their bodywork like motorsport kit. In other words, expect both restraint and swagger to coexist in the range, depending on the badge and the brief.
For the iX3, this approach makes sense. The SUV market rewards familiarity, but it also punishes anonymity, and Neue Klasse looks poised to thread that needle with sharper detailing and a stronger design identity. If BMW can keep the proportions right and the graphic elements purposeful, the iX3 could be the car that proves the brand can move on without losing its edge.
