LOOK: BMW 220i Coupe’s Damp Autobahn Showdown

In a world dominated by high-powered BMWs tearing up the Autobahn, a refreshing change comes in the form of the unassuming 2 Series Coupe. Unlike its pricier M Performance and M counterparts, this particular model, the 220i, embraces simplicity with an eight-speed automatic transmission shared with other G42 models. While not designed for high-speed cruising, the 220i offers sufficient velocity for a leisurely drive on the German highway.

Under the hood, a turbocharged 2.0-liter gasoline engine churns out 181 horsepower and 221 pound-feet of torque, propelling the 2 Series Coupe to a respectable 143 mph on a damp Autobahn. Although BMW claims the 220i can go even faster, the congested highway on the test day discouraged taking unnecessary risks.

Adorned with the M Sport Package and finished in Sapphire Black, this 2 Series Coupe, built before July 2022, predates the integration of iDrive 8 in the rear-wheel-drive coupe. Notably, the 220i is not the entry-level G42 variant, as BMW offers the lesser 218i in some markets, featuring a detuned version of the same B48 engine. While the 220i and 220d are exclusive to RWD, the 230i introduces the option for xDrive, and the M240i even allows a choice between two- and all-wheel drive.

As we look to the future, whispers suggest that 2026 might mark a significant shift for the M2, potentially introducing the first-ever xDrive version. Meanwhile, the regular G42 2 Series is anticipated to undergo a Life Cycle Impulse in mid-2025. Despite uncertainties surrounding specific changes, the potential return of a six-speed manual gearbox to a non-M2 version seems unlikely. The stick shift, once a staple, is fading, yet BMW insists on meeting demand by preserving manual options for the M2, M3, and M4 – at least for now.
