Breaking News: BMW’s M3 Is Going Fully Electric

BMW has officially confirmed that the next-generation M3 will be fully electric. This revelation comes straight from BMW Head of Development Frank Weber in an interview with Carsales. The decision to go electric is a significant shift for the M3, known for its powerful internal combustion engines. However, BMW is committed to making this transition only if it can surpass the performance of the current inline-six model.

This shift is enabled by the development of the quad-motor-focused Neue Klasse platform. BMW hinted at this with a high-performance EV using a modified i4 M50 prototype with four motors. Frank Weber revealed BMW’s one-megawatt electric car capability, equivalent to 1,341 hp.

While the exact launch date for the all-electric M3 remains undisclosed, BMW’s commitment to the Neue Klasse-based sedan in 2025 suggests a relatively short wait. Speculations hint at a potential launch by 2027 or 2028. Notably, BMW plans to offer both the electric M3 and the gasoline-fueled version for a period, tweaking the latter’s S58 engine to meet Euro 7 regulations. This strategy acknowledges the ongoing demand for high-performance internal combustion engines while transitioning toward an electric future.

The fate of the ICE M3 might eventually be sealed, but for now, BMW remains dedicated to the twin-turbo, 3.0-liter engine. This bold step by BMW marks a significant milestone in the iconic M3’s journey from gasoline power to electrifying performance.
