The BMW X5 and Mercedes-Benz GLE remain two of the most established names in the mid-size luxury SUV class. Both have evolved far beyond their early generations, now blending premium cabins, advanced technology and strong road presence. While they occupy similar space in the market, their priorities differ in ways that become clear once you look beyond the badges.

BMW sets a confident tone with its standard powertrain. The X5 opens with a turbocharged six-cylinder engine, delivering smooth, muscular performance that feels well matched to the vehicle’s size and weight. Mercedes takes a different route by starting the GLE range with a four-cylinder unit, which prioritises efficiency but lacks the same sense of effortless pace. To reach similar output levels, the GLE needs a higher-grade six-cylinder variant.
Practicality is where the Mercedes answers back. The GLE offers greater flexibility for families, including the option of a third seating row and more generous rear legroom. Passengers in the second row benefit from a roomier feel, and overall cargo capacity slightly favours the Mercedes when the seats are folded. The X5 counters with a snugger, more driver-focused layout and marginally better headroom.

On the road, the BMW leans into its reputation for balanced dynamics. The X5 feels composed at motorway speeds and controlled when the pace quickens, with steering and suspension that work together naturally. The GLE delivers a comfortable, refined ride, especially with air suspension fitted, but it can feel less settled over larger undulations and lacks the same precision when pushed.
Taken as a whole, the X5 stands out for its all-around polish and standard mechanical advantage, making it the more engaging option from behind the wheel. The GLE remains a strong contender, offering space, comfort and a distinctly plush character. The decision ultimately comes down to whether driving finesse or interior versatility matters more.
