Exploring the European vs. American BMW X1 M35i

The recent unveiling of the BMW X1 M35i left enthusiasts on both sides of the Atlantic with a sense of déjà vu. The European and North American spec sheets revealed that these variants were nearly identical, except for one crucial difference. While the European model boasted 296 horsepower, its American counterpart packed a more powerful punch with 312 hp. The mystery behind this 16-hp gap was left unexplained by BMW. But a closer look revealed a possible reason tied to stricter emissions regulations in the European Union.

In a revealing interview with Bimmer Today, M CEO Frank van Meel confirmed speculations regarding the power disparity. The X1 M35i utilizes a slightly detuned version of its turbocharged 2.0-liter gasoline engine to comply with rigorous European standards. This discrepancy mirrors a similar situation with another M Performance offering, the Z4 M40i. This showcased a 47-hp gap between European and American versions, even after a recent update. Van Meel’s statements suggest that upcoming models like the M135i and X2 M35i will likely follow suit in 2024.

The X1 M35i presents a compelling package as an M Performance model. Its fully electric iX1 xDrive30 outperforms it with 308 hp and 364 lb-ft of torque. On the other hand, the X1 xDrive30e plug-in hybrid surpasses it with a combined output of 322 hp and 352 lb-ft. Nevertheless, Frank van Meel reminds the inherent advantages of internal combustion engines, as they deliver full power at all times.

Beyond its power differentials, the X1 M35i distinguishes itself as more than just an X1 with a beefier engine. It boasts desirable features such as M Compound brakes, a front mechanical limited-slip differential, adaptive M suspension, and specific M chassis tuning. These additions contribute to a well-rounded driving experience. The X1 M35i will arrive in the US in October and Europe in November, delivering an exciting M Performance SUV option.
