The all-electric BMW iX3 has taken on an unusual job. It is hauling a travelling photography studio the length and breadth of France. The caravan belongs to the LUX Tour, a year-long celebration of photography’s bicentenary. BMW France is the official partner, and its newest electric SUV is the muscle behind the whole convoy.
The tour set off from the courtyard of the French Ministry of Culture in Paris on 3 September. From there it links up more than 30 photography festivals and fairs across the country. The run continues until September 2027. At each stop, visitors step into a darkroom and make a picture using nothing but their own heartbeat.
Here the BMW iX3 does more than tow. Its bidirectional Vehicle-to-Load technology feeds electricity straight into the mobile studio. So the same battery that moves the caravan down the autoroute also powers the kit that turns a pulse into a print. Zero-emission mobility becomes part of the art.
There is a neat thread of history running through it. Nicephore Niepce is credited as the inventor of photography. With his brother Claude, he also helped build one of the world’s first internal combustion engines. Two centuries on, an electric BMW carries that spirit of image and motion back onto the road.
For BMW France, the partnership extends a twenty-year commitment to photography. The LUX Tour sits alongside the brand’s ART MAKERS programme, both endorsed by the Ministry of Culture. One nurtures new talent. The other, with the BMW iX3 leading the way, carries the finished art to towns and cities everywhere.
