Monterey Car Week gave BMW M the perfect backdrop, and the M Concept Neue Klasse took centre stage for its North American debut. The timing was deliberate, landing on the M3’s 40th birthday. We caught up with M chief Frank van Meel among the historic racers at Laguna Seca. His message was clear. The badge is going electric, yet its motorsport roots stay firmly in place.
The M Concept Neue Klasse previews the first fully electric generation of M performance cars. Four electric motors put the power down. A new control brain, which BMW nicknames the Heart of Joy, knits together drive, braking and dynamics with far sharper precision than before. The widebody stance, the yellow lights, the GT3-style aero and the natural-fibre bucket seats all nod straight to the track.
Van Meel insists the switch is a choice, not a mandate. M stays in close contact with its customers, dealers and clubs, and only commits when it can build the car exactly as intended. The Neue Klasse platform handed engineers a clean sheet for torque vectoring, bespoke software and true M feel. At the same time, the inline-six and the V8 live on, reworked to meet Euro 7, for drivers who still want combustion and its soundtrack.
Feedback is already shaping the range. In the United States, van Meel notes, one in every two M2s leaves with a manual gearbox, which prompted a limited rear-drive, three-pedal model that sold out almost at once. On electric sound, he draws a firm line. Copying an old engine note wholesale would ring hollow. Instead, M wants authentic acoustics and distinct drive stages, even simulated shift steps, without faking a combustion car’s power interruptions.
Motorsport remains the connecting thread. Van Meel rates WEC and IMSA above Formula 1, because their engineering flows straight into road cars, as the M4 GT3 hardware and LMDh lighting on the concept prove. IMSA matters most, since America accounts for roughly 40 per cent of M sales. Asked which single M car he would keep, he chose the M1, the emotional starting point of the marque, before wavering towards a 3.0 CSL race car.
