All 20 BMW Art Cars Roar Into BMW Welt For Their Big Reunion

For the very first time in the half-century history of the BMW Art Car Collection, every single one of the brand’s 20 hand-painted rolling sculptures will be parked together under one roof, with the BMW Art Cars set to take over BMW Welt in Munich from 29 July through to 31 August 2026. Officially titled “BMW Art Cars – 20 Artists, 50 Years Of Innovation. Reunited At BMW Welt”, the landmark show throws open its doors with an invitation-only opening ceremony on 28 July before the public viewing kicks off the morning after. Visitors will be able to walk among machines that span everything from a 1975 BMW 3.0 CSL touched by Alexander Calder right through to the most recent 2024 contribution, a BMW M Hybrid V8 reimagined by American artist Julie Mehretu.

One of the standout machines on display will be Olafur Eliasson’s extraordinary BMW H2R Project, a piece built around BMW’s record-breaking hydrogen-powered prototype that has only been wheeled out for public viewing on three previous occasions since its 2007 world premiere. Because the installation needs to be presented inside a specially frozen environment, getting the car in front of an audience is a serious logistical undertaking each time it happens. Sandra Wittemer, who heads up BMW Welt, says she is delighted to be hosting the grand finale of the world tour, adding that the exhibition allows international visitors to absorb the diversity of artistic approaches and technological progress of the past five decades all in one go.

The story of the collection itself is the stuff of motoring folklore, kicking off in 1975 when French racing driver and art dealer Hervé Poulain teamed up with the then head of BMW Motorsport, Jochen Neerpasch, to invite Alexander Calder to turn a thundering 3.0 CSL into a piece of moving art. That very car went on to compete at the 24 Hours of Le Mans the same year and became a runaway crowd favourite at La Sarthe. The roster of artists who have followed in Calder’s footsteps reads like a who’s who of the contemporary art world, with names including Frank Stella, Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol, Robert Rauschenberg, Esther Mahlangu, David Hockney, Jenny Holzer, Jeff Koons, Cao Fei, and Mehretu herself all leaving their fingerprints on the bonnets, doors, and bodywork of various Bavarian machines.

What makes the Munich reunion particularly compelling is the way the cars together trace a cross-section of art history from the past five decades, with Minimalism, Pop Art, Magical Realism, Abstraction, Conceptual Art, and Digital Art all visible on the panels parked side by side at BMW Welt. Mehretu’s most recent contribution even pushes the very definition of what an Art Car can be, with the artist co-founding the African Film and Media Arts Collective alongside screenwriter and film producer Mehret Mandefro to bring artists and filmmakers from Africa and the diaspora together for a series of workshops. The final piece of that wider project, an exhibition titled “Turning Towards the Sun”, will run from 11 December 2026 through 15 August 2027 at the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa in Cape Town.

The Munich gathering also serves as the closing chapter of the BMW Art Car World Tour, the most ambitious travelling exhibition in the collection’s history. Since rolling out in March 2025 to mark the 50th anniversary, the tour has stopped at 60 venues across more than 30 countries on five continents, drawing well over two million visitors to fairs and events including Art Basel Hong Kong, Art Dubai, Auto Shanghai, the Le Mans 24 Hours, Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, the Louwman Museum in The Hague, and Rétromobile in Paris. Before the convoy reaches Munich, two further appearances are still scheduled at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este on Lake Como from 15 to 17 May and at the Classic Car House in Copenhagen until 21 June. BMW Welt’s auditorium will then play host to the historic gathering daily from 9 am to 6 pm, with the on-site Lifestyle and Accessory Shop offering a freshly reissued BMW Art Cars publication from Hatje Cantz Verlag, along with a fresh range of miniature scale models for collectors hoping to take a piece of the magic home.
