Jeff Koons rebooted the BMW Art Car story’s Pop Art streak in 2010 by turning a BMW M3 GT2 into a visual overtake. The LMGT2 racer wore bright colour blasts and sharp, forward-thrusting lines that made the car look like it was already on full chat, even when it was parked. The message was clear and unapologetic: make speed visible.
This wasn’t a case of painting first and asking questions later. Koons worked closely with BMW’s engineers in Munich so the artwork followed the M3 GT2’s complex bodywork without upsetting aerodynamics or adding unwanted weight. Digital tools and simulations helped the graphics sit properly over arches, vents and curves, so the design looked intentional from every angle rather than simply stuck on top.
Koons also wanted the sensation behind the shape, not just the shape itself. He pulled on a helmet for test laps at Sebring with Rahal Letterman Racing, rode shotgun in a classic BMW M1, and drove a road-going BMW M3 to feel how speed builds, how the car loads up, and how momentum carries through a corner. That hands-on contact fed straight into the sweeping motion of the final livery.
With only two months from first sketch to unveiling, BMW used digitally printed wrap film rather than traditional paint, then sealed it under clear coats for durability. Hundreds of lines were applied across the car and spare panels, with added graphic elements at the rear to suggest flying debris and rings that hinted at hard acceleration—detail work that matched the M3 GT2’s race-bred intent.
The car debuted on 1 June 2010 at the Centre Pompidou in Paris, then headed to the 78th running of the 24 Hours of Le Mans with Dirk Müller, Dirk Werner and Andy Priaulx on driving duties. It drew instant attention on track, but its race ended early; BMW still brought home a sixth-place LMGT2 finish with another M3 GT2 crew. In 2026, the story loops back to Paris as Rétromobile showcases the seven BMW Art Cars that have competed at Le Mans, with Koons’ M3 GT2 firmly among the headline acts.
