The BMW X1 is gearing up for a significant transformation, and spy photographers have finally caught the compact SUV stretching its legs in combustion-engined form for the first time. Set for a 2027 reveal, the updated BMW X1 will split into two distinct directions depending on what sits under the bonnet. While the electric iX1 is being developed as an entirely new vehicle, the petrol and diesel variants will build on the bones of the current model, receiving a dramatically reworked front end that borrows heavily from BMW’s Neue Klasse design language.
From the A-pillar rearward, the prototype looks virtually identical to the X1 we know today, but the nose tells a completely different story. Slim, narrow kidney grilles now sit front and centre, flanked by enclosed headlights that echo the look of the recently launched iX3. Because there is still a combustion engine to keep cool, the lower section of the grille remains open to channel airflow into the engine bay. New bumpers, side sills, a revised roof spoiler and quad exhaust tips on sportier M Performance variants are also expected to round out the exterior refresh.
Underneath the restyled bodywork, the X1 will continue to offer a familiar spread of mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains. Topping the range will be a high-performance turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing around 300 brake horsepower, paired with all-wheel drive. More modest variants will stick with front-wheel drive, keeping the lineup accessible for buyers who do not need all four wheels pulling their weight.
The biggest revolution, however, is taking place inside the cabin. BMW’s Panoramic iDrive system is making its way into the X1, evidenced by a distinctive black band at the base of the windscreen that houses a full-width head-up display. A new touchscreen interface will also feature, though whether it matches the generous 17.9-inch panel found in the iX3 or adopts a slightly smaller unit remains to be seen. Either way, the interior is set for a wholesale redesign that should bring the compact SUV firmly in line with BMW’s latest cockpit philosophy.
As part of BMW’s ambitious push to roll out 40 new models by the end of 2027, the refreshed X1 may not grab the loudest headlines, but it is one of the most critical launches on the calendar. Competing head-to-head with the Mercedes GLA, Audi Q3 and Volvo XC40 in one of the most fiercely contested segments in the market, this updated X1 needs to deliver on every front. With Neue Klasse kerb appeal up front, proven powertrain options beneath the bonnet and a cabin packed with cutting-edge technology, the next chapter for BMW’s best-selling compact SUV looks like it has all the right ingredients to stay ahead of the pack.
