BMW’s next X5 is shaping up to be more than a scaled-up iX3, and fresh winter test sightings suggest it will carve out its own design identity. Prototypes running through northern Sweden show production-style lighting hardware, with the rear graphics in particular hinting at a bolder, more upmarket signature than BMW’s smaller Neue Klasse SUV.
Up front, the X5 appears to borrow the Neue Klasse playbook without simply copying and pasting it. Expect a slim, visor-like lighting treatment, a pair of more upright kidney grilles, and a cleaner nose that looks designed around airflow and cooling rather than visual clutter. Lower down, the bumper detail is still heavily disguised, but the overall stance reads wide and planted.
Along the flanks, the familiar X5 proportions remain, yet the details look newly tightened. Flush door handles sit within cleaner surfacing, and a large panoramic glass roof stretches between pronounced roof rails. It’s a tidy, modern look that should suit the X5’s role as the family heavyweight without turning it into a blunt instrument.
At the rear, the roofline tapers into a sculpted spoiler, and the tailgate appears to retain the practical split-opening layout. The new tail-lamp graphic looks designed to emphasise width, visually anchoring the car and separating it from the iX3’s design cues. With the lower bumper still under camouflage, there’s more to come, but the fundamentals look cohesive.
Powertrain variety should remain a core part of the X5’s appeal, with combustion, plug-in hybrid and fully electric versions expected to sit side by side on an evolved platform. That means buyers should still be able to choose between long-legged usability and harder-edged performance, with electrified top-end models likely to deliver serious shove and traction without sacrificing the X5’s everyday brief.
