MINI Countryman Gets Vagabund Overhaul As Mobile Sound Stage

MINI has teamed up with Austrian design studio Vagabund to build a pair of bespoke MINI Countryman one-offs that blur the line between vehicle and mobile sound stage. Built on the Countryman S ALL4 platform, one finished in Melting Silver with sand and white accents and the other draped in monochrome Midnight Black, these two machines are designed to work as individual statements on their own and as a unified sonic experience when parked side by side. It is a collaboration rooted in festival culture, community spirit and the kind of bold individualisation that has been part of MINI’s DNA since the very first car rolled off the line.

The bodywork has been reworked from bumper to bumper. Wider wheel arches give both cars a broader, more planted stance, while colour-coordinated front and rear bumpers flow into a revised radiator grille for a cohesive look. Three-dimensional Vagabund lettering runs along the side sills, and a raised ride height sharpens the off-road character of the ALL4 drivetrain. Filling those arches are 20-inch wheels fitted with closed-off 3D-printed covers that give each wheel a muscular, speaker-like profile. Up top, a roof rack constructed from laser-cut and folded aluminium plates sits over an integrated stainless-steel mesh, echoing the visual language of speaker grilles and tying the roof into the overall design narrative.

The real engineering centrepiece sits where the rear side windows used to be. Vagabund has replaced the glass with a purpose-built outdoor sound system housed in cast polymer granite, a material chosen for its ability to deliver clean, undistorted audio projection. Tweeters and mid-range drivers are integrated directly into the bodywork, while subwoofers concealed in the rear unleash deep bass the moment the tailgate swings open. Each Countryman operates as a standalone sound system, but when the pair is positioned together, they form a full mobile stage capable of powering an immersive outdoor listening experience. On the opposite flank, a cheeky nod to analogue nostalgia appears in the form of a classic Walkman mounted inside a 3D-printed housing, delivering a quiet, personal counterpoint to the open-air system with the playful humour MINI is known for.

Both builds showcase a level of craftsmanship that goes well beyond a surface-level wrap or bolt-on kit. Every component, from the speaker housings to the wheel covers and roof rack panels, has been developed with the same attention to detail and material integrity that defines Vagabund’s approach to reinterpreting existing products. MINI provided the canvas and the engineering platform; Vagabund layered on its creative signature. The result is two vehicles that champion individuality over convention and hands-on craft over flashy excess, reflecting values both brands share at their core.

MINI will roll out the first of the two one-offs to the public at Auto China 2026 in Beijing, marking the global debut of the collaboration on one of the automotive calendar’s biggest stages. After the motor show premiere, both cars will hit the road across a variety of live platforms and cultural events, staying true to the community-driven philosophy that fuelled the project from the start. For a brand built on personalisation, the MINI x Vagabund partnership is a powerful signal that bespoke craftsmanship and cultural storytelling remain firmly in the driving seat.
