BMW’s quiet expansion of Alpina trademarks has sparked fresh speculation about a new flagship SUV. Among familiar names linked to existing models, one unexpected badge has emerged that does not correspond to anything currently on sale. The appearance of XB8 has raised eyebrows, suggesting something larger and more exclusive may be under consideration.
Alpina has long occupied a distinct space within BMW’s universe, focusing on refined performance rather than outright aggression. Its naming structure has remained consistent for decades, pairing BMW model numbers with simple engine identifiers. An XB8 would logically sit above the XB7, pointing towards a petrol-powered luxury SUV positioned at the very top of the range.
That naturally leads to questions about the long-rumoured BMW X8. Talk of a sleeker, range-topping SUV has surfaced repeatedly over the years, often described as a more style-led alternative to the X7. While such a model has never reached production, BMW has held onto the X8 name for decades, leaving the door open for a future revival.
The arrival of the XM complicated matters, as BMW positioned it firmly as a standalone M-only product rather than a traditional X model. Its size and proportions already overlap with the X7, making an Alpina variant awkward to place.
