BMW XB3 Trademark Hints At Alpina Built X3 Performance Flagship

The BMW XB3 trademark filing has lit up enthusiast forums and pointed towards a fascinating shift in how Munich plans to deliver the next high-performance X3. Rather than handing the badge straight to the M division for a successor to the F97-coded model, BMW appears to be eyeing Alpina, the boutique tuner now operating under the BMW umbrella, to develop the most potent G45-based X3 yet. Decode the naming convention and the picture sharpens, because X denotes a crossover, B stands for benzine, and 3 ties the badge directly to the X3, all hallmarks of Alpina’s long-standing model nomenclature.

For context, the previous-generation G01 X3 finally received its full-fat M treatment back in 2019, complete with M and M Competition variants and an internal F97 designation. That model’s engine famously underpinned the launch of the G80 M3 and M3 Competition saloons, lending it a pivotal place in recent M division history. Yet nearly two years have passed since the current G45 X3 broke cover, and the second-generation X3 M still hasn’t materialised. The hottest version available remains the M50, which delivers 393hp and 428lb-ft from its 3.0-litre turbocharged straight-six, decent firepower that nonetheless sits well short of the previous M Competition’s 503hp benchmark.

The XB3 trademark wasn’t filed in isolation either, which makes the speculation feel rather more grounded. A separate filing for XB8 surfaced alongside it, hinting at an Alpina-developed replacement for the slow-selling and divisive XM flagship. Both names slot perfectly into the established Alpina naming structure, lending weight to the theory that BMW intends to channel its high-performance crossover ambitions through Buchloe rather than the Garching M skunkworks. If Alpina assumes responsibility for these halo models, the brand’s signature blend of brute pace and grand-tourer manners could reshape what an X3 flagship feels like behind the wheel.

History suggests Alpina is more than ready for the assignment. Across the previous two generations of X3, the company produced the XD3, a diesel-powered overachiever that never officially crossed the Atlantic. The most recent iteration was hauled along by a Euro-only 3.0-litre quad-turbo diesel six punching out 383hp and a stonking 568lb-ft, comfortably eclipsing the twin-turbocharged X3 M40d of its era. Squeezing four turbochargers into a chassis never designed to take them was a small engineering miracle, even if right-hand-drive markets ultimately missed out on that particular variant entirely.

Should the XB3 land as a petrol-powered evolution, it would mark Alpina’s first crack at developing a high-performance petrol X3, building on its diesel heritage while finally giving global markets a genuine alternative to the M division’s recipe. Output is the burning question, and given the M50 already brushes 400hp, anything less would feel underwhelming. A figure north of 400hp, paired with Alpina’s traditionally rear-biased four-wheel-drive calibration, plush long-distance comfort and bespoke aero, could carve out a genuinely distinct identity within the BMW portfolio. Whether this signals BMW quietly turning Alpina into its full-time performance crossover arm, however, will be the story to watch unfold.
