A new AI pilot solution, GenAI4Q, is redefining how BMW Group Plant Regensburg conducts final inspections on the 1,400 vehicles that roll off its assembly line daily. By analysing model types, equipment variants, and real-time production data, the software identifies optimal inspection steps for each unique car, enabling faster, more reliable checks without compromising BMW’s high standards.
Vehicles undergo multiple quality assessments during assembly, but the final check is crucial in ensuring customers receive a premium product. Given the complexity of producing an extensive range of drive trains—from combustion engines to fully electric powertrains—and countless optional features, the GenAI4Q system distils vast production data into a tailored checklist for each vehicle. Inspectors can access their smartphone-based workflow for step-by-step guidance, with integrated speech recognition enabling easy issue logging and standardised coding.
Developed collaboratively at BMW Group Plant Regensburg and the Munich startup Datagon AI, GenAI4Q relies on pattern recognition to decide the order of checks, making it an essential tool in a digitally connected production environment. By streamlining time-sensitive processes in a factory where a new BMW is completed every 57 seconds, GenAI4Q frees staff to focus on precision and consistency, ultimately reinforcing BMW’s reputation for delivering outstanding vehicles around the globe.
