BMW iX3 Prototype Pushes Range and Tech Boundaries in France

Prototypes of the all-new BMW iX3 are pounding the Miramas test track, marking the final leg before the Sports Activity Vehicle’s world debut at IAA Mobility 2025 in Munich. The first Neue Klasse production model blends familiar BMW agility with a sixth-generation electric drive that can cover up to 800 km on a single charge. Built around a rigid structure that doubles as the battery enclosure, the SAV already feels poised and whisper-smooth through Miramas’s sweeping bends.

Central to this progress is an 800-volt architecture feeding new cylindrical-cell batteries that accept 400 kW DC charging. Owners will be able to add roughly 350 km of motorway range in the time it takes to grab a coffee, and an AI-assisted flap even pops open automatically when the car approaches a learned charging point. Bidirectional capability means the iX3 can power campsite equipment, feed a household system, or support the grid via a 19.2 kW wallbox.

Inside, BMW Panoramic iDrive projects key data across the windscreen from pillar to pillar, aided by a 3D head-up layer, a floating central screen and shy-tech steering-wheel controls that illuminate only when needed. Operating System X mixes tactile buttons with over-the-air updates, so future features can be added without a workshop visit, keeping the cabin fresh long after delivery.

On the move, the Heart of Joy control computer and Dynamic Performance Control software knit steering, torque vectoring, recuperation and braking into a single high-speed loop that processes inputs ten times faster than before. The result is crisp turn-in, fine throttle modulation and one-pedal stopping power, with friction pads barely engaged in everyday driving.

Next-generation driver assistance extends that intelligence beyond twisty roads. A motorway assistant manages lane changes from slip road to exit, while urban logic now recognises traffic lights, roundabouts and tight streets. Production at Debrecen starts late next year, and early impressions from France suggest the BMW iX3 will deliver the brand’s hallmark composure and innovation in an unmistakably electric form.
