Rumor has it that there will be a special BMW engine that will help BMW achieve its carbon emmission level goals. This will come in the form of the 500cc three-cylinder engine.
BMW has been very vocal about the goal of decreasing their carbon emissions. This goal urged BMW to use new three, four, six and eight-cylinder engines to replace the current ones they use.
This will manifest in the new 1 and 3 Series vehicles, but will also be used by MINI fleet as well.
If you think that three-cylinder engines lack power and are weak, BMW will make you think again. Their three-cylinder engine will have excellent refinement, efficient fuel use, sporting edge, and significantly decreased carbon emmissions. Vehicles will also be more lightweight with the use of this light engine. How cool is that?
The four-cylinder engines are turbocharged and will offer a three range variant. This will be used by the new 2011 BMW 1 Series and the 2011 BMW X3.
This move by BMW is also expected to result in less costs for engine production, thus hitting two birds at one shot. Cutting back at costs and effective CO2 emmissions will both be achieved.
