Europe’s next wave of emissions rules is already reshaping how high-performance saloons and SUVs are calibrated, and BMW is now adjusting the M5’s twin-turbo 4.4-litre V8 for European-market cars. The headline is simple: the combustion engine will deliver less output in Europe, even though the overall system figure is intended to remain the same, thanks to changes elsewhere in the drivetrain.

Rather than ripping out the V8, BMW is refining how it runs. The updates focus on cleaner operation and revised engine management, with hardware and calibration changes aimed at meeting tighter limits. In plug-in hybrid form, the balancing act becomes key: if the petrol side is softened, the electric motor is tuned to shoulder more of the load when conditions allow, keeping the car’s straight-line urge consistent when the battery has sufficient charge.
Across the Atlantic, it’s a different story. US versions are expected to keep the V8’s existing output, which should also mean less reliance on electric assistance to hit peak performance. In everyday use, that can translate into more consistent shove when the battery state of charge is lower, because there’s less need for the motor to “fill in” to achieve the headline numbers.

This split also underlines how differently BMW now has to package its powertrains by region. European line-ups increasingly prioritise smaller petrol units, plug-in hybrids and EVs, while certain larger-capacity options are either missing entirely or limited to M and M Performance models. The result is that the same badge can deliver notably different engine choices depending on where you buy it.
For enthusiasts, the takeaway is that the V8 isn’t disappearing, but it is being reshaped by regulation and market demands. Europe gets a cleaner, more hybrid-dependent calibration; the US keeps the V8 in a more familiar state of tune. Either way, BMW is signalling that future M performance will be as much about systems integration and calibration as it is about cubic capacity.
