One of the 1,000 M4 CSLs that BMW will produce is now on show at the 2022 Essen Motor Show. Alpine White is one of just three colours available for the Competition Sport Lightweight. The high-performance coupe, owned by JP Performance, is painted in M colours to go with the customary Motorsport badges.
Given that the M division is commemorating its 50th anniversary this year, it genuinely seems like something BMW would produce. You can even see the M colours on the kidney grille’s curve on this CSL if you look closely. With the OEM carbon fibre accessories made especially for this car, the matte grey body surfaces mix perfectly. For an M4 CSL showcar, the outside livery does a good job of drawing a lot of attention. This is true despite some critics saying it is a little cluttered.
Since the M4 CSL’s debut, a new model also gets attention. The 3.0 CSL also features distinctive headlights with yellow accents and laser taillights. If you haven’t noticed, the new M4 CSL features red outlines for the emblems on the front fenders and tailgate. The M4-badged variant is closer to the source car since it lacks a vintage body. It also features a ducktail spoiler identical to the M3 E46 CSL. The “CSL” badge follows this concept inside.
Since a hot CS derivative is to debut later next year to close the gap between the Competition and CSL variants, BMW is far from finished modifying the M4 G82. Given that the M3 already switched to iDrive 8 for the 2023 model year, adopting iDrive 8 is probably just a matter of time. After deciding to extend the life cycle to 2027, a Life Cycle Impulse will later bring styling changes to keep the car modern.
When BMW plans to unveil the M3 CS at the start of next year, we should have a better notion of what to anticipate from the M4 CS.
