BMW’s iX looks like nothing else on the road, with a nose and surfacing that split opinion yet clearly signal flagship intent. Spend five minutes in the cabin, though, and the design makes sense: airy, modern and built around long-distance ease. The materials feel properly upmarket, the layout is clean, and the whole thing has that quiet confidence you expect from a range-topper.
On the move, the iX impresses for a machine of its size. The dedicated EV platform and lightweight materials do the heavy lifting, keeping body control tidy and steering responses crisp without turning the ride firm or fidgety. Around town, it glides with near-silent refinement, while on motorways it settles into a smooth, hushed stride with barely a whisper of wind rustle.
BMW’s facelifted updates sharpen the drivetrain line-up, with revised inverters, motors and software bringing a stronger punch and better efficiency. The xDrive45 now feels brisk and well matched to the chassis, the xDrive60 adds extra shove and distance between charging stops, and the M70 brings hardware upgrades that tighten the car’s responses further. Even then, the iX’s character stays composed rather than aggressive, leaning on grip, control and traction you can trust.
Efficiency has improved notably versus earlier versions, and charging performance is strong across the range. Real-world testing suggests the iX can hold its own on long motorway stretches, where some EVs fade, and the headline range figure reaches up to 426 miles depending on specification. Better cooling and software management help keep charging speeds more consistent, which matters far more than a single peak number.
Practicality is solid, with generous passenger space, a flat floor in the rear and seats that feel more lounge than bench. The boot isn’t the class benchmark, but the load area is usable, and the rear seats fold to open it up for a bulkier kit. Add a five-star Euro NCAP score, a suite of driver assistance tech and BMW’s familiar iDrive controls alongside the big screens, and the iX comes across as a polished, easy-to-live-with electric SUV.
