The BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé production is underway at BMW Group Plant Leipzig, marking the start of its second generation. As a standout addition to the plant’s offerings, it joins models like the BMW 1 Series, BMW 2 Series Active Tourer, and MINI Countryman, with up to 1,300 cars manufactured daily. The Leipzig plant’s production line demonstrates remarkable adaptability, assembling four models with varied drive options across two brands, underscoring its flexibility. This updated model is expected to hit the market by March 2025.
Initially introduced five years ago, the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé brought a new level of luxury to the compact segment, with the first model debuting in Leipzig in 2019. The car was launched in early 2020, appealing strongly in markets like the UK, China, and the US. Designed to embody sporty elegance, this new iteration is defined by its dynamic stance, refined engine range, and advanced partially automated driving and parking capabilities, which are included as a standard feature.
Visually, the 2 Series Gran Coupé sports an eye-catching design, complete with a striking front profile, a sweeping silhouette, and a bold rear that enhances its sporty appeal. Its build quality is underscored by laser-beam welding technology introduced for the tailgate assembly. The car’s interior has also received significant upgrades, including a leather-free design, BMW’s Curved Display, and enhanced seat comfort, making it well-suited for long drives.
The model lineup includes the high-powered M235 xDrive Gran Coupé, with a robust 300-hp four-cylinder engine. Set to launch alongside two additional petrol and diesel options, this variant offers optimized fuel consumption and reduced CO2 emissions. To enhance the car’s customization, a selection of seven metallic and four BMW Individual finishes, as well as an optional contrast roof will also be available.
The plant has seen extensive upgrades since 2018 and can now produce 350,000 cars annually, a leap of 100,000 units. This growth, spurred by the addition of the MINI Countryman, has created around 900 new jobs in 2024 alone. With round-the-clock, three-shift production now in place, the Leipzig facility continues strengthening its role as a critical hub for BMW and MINI manufacturing.
