BMW hasn’t wasted any time with the M5 Touring. Despite the car only arriving recently, a heavily revised version has already been spotted pounding around Arctic test routes, wrapped up to disguise a fresh front-end and a wholesale cabin rethink. The plan is a 2027 debut, timed to align with wider updates across the 5 Series family.
The biggest visual change appears to be concentrated around the nose. Expect a Neue Klasse-inspired face with a sharper grille and slimmer lighting signature, plus broad, glossy housings that blend lamps with the cameras, radars and sensors needed for modern driver assistance. There’s also a sizeable lower intake, giving the Touring a more assertive stance while feeding cooling air where it’s needed under hard load.
Mechanically, the recipe looks set to stay focused on plug-in hybrid muscle. The twin-turbo V8 and electric motor pairing should remain, sending power to all four wheels through an eight-speed automatic and an active all-wheel-drive system designed to juggle traction in all conditions. Changes here are likely to be calibration-led—more seamless torque delivery, sharper response, and tighter integration between combustion and electric drive.
Inside, the clues suggest a major leap. That dark band across the windscreen points to BMW’s Panoramic iDrive layout, bringing a wide display strip and a simpler, more touch-led control philosophy than today’s set-up. With a new Audi RS 6 Avant expected on a similar timetable, the next couple of years could turn the fast estate arms race into a straight fight of design, tech and drivetrain sophistication.
