BMW iX3 Debuts Panoramic iDrive with Haptic Steering

The familiar iDrive knob that once defined BMW’s cabin technology is gone. In its place, the new BMW iX3 introduces Panoramic iDrive, a pillar-to-pillar display and haptic steering controls that represent a complete rethink of how drivers interact with their cars.

The system uses a 43-inch projected display running the latest Operating System X, stretching across the lower edge of the windscreen. Linked directly to a redesigned steering wheel, it keeps information within the driver’s line of sight while reducing reliance on traditional buttons. The left side of the wheel handles driver assistance and cruise functions, while the right side manages media, calls and navigation widgets. Keys illuminate only when available, helping to reduce clutter.

The haptic surfaces are shaped with ridges and feedback to guide thumb placement without looking away from the road. Voice commands, powered by advanced language processing, play an even larger role, taking on many of the functions once assigned to physical switches.

The iX3’s minimalist interior places nearly all controls on the central display, from climate to customisable widgets. What remains is a clean, futuristic layout that emphasises driver focus and digital integration. With the iDrive knob now retired, BMW’s Panoramic iDrive marks a bold step into its next era of cockpit design.
