BMW is set to honour Ndebele artist Esther Mahlangu during the upcoming Frieze London 2024, running from October 9 to 13. Known for her stunning geometric works, Mahlangu will unveil her new mural, “Umuntu ngumuntu ngabantu”, at Serpentine North. This event celebrates her long-standing collaboration with BMW, which began in 1991 when she became the first woman to create a BMW Art Car. Visitors to the BMW Lounge will also be treated to an exclusive exhibition curated by actor and collector Russell Tovey, featuring pieces by female, queer, and artists of colour in response to Mahlangu’s work.
Mahlangu’s career spans over eight decades, during which she has mastered the traditional Ndebele technique, painting bold and intricate patterns by hand. Her unique style has been applied to large-scale murals and smaller canvases, with her BMW 525i Art Car being one of the most famous highlights of her career. At Frieze London, guests will also have the chance to preview her first interview publication, “Esther Mahlangu: To Paint is in My Heart,” co-edited by Azu Nwagbogu and Hans Ulrich Obrist, with contributions from fashion designer Thebe Magugu.
Frieze London 2024 will also feature a performance by contemporary Indie-Pop singer Arlo Parks at KOKO Theatre as part of the Frieze Music series, presented by BMW. The event underscores BMW’s commitment to blending art, music, and culture in a way that sparks creative conversations. Parks, whose poetic lyrics have earned her critical acclaim, will take the stage on October 10, adding a musical dimension to the art fair.
As a long-standing partner of Frieze, BMW continues to highlight its cultural engagement by providing platforms for artists and musicians to showcase their talents. This year’s Frieze London promises to be a vibrant celebration of creativity and collaboration, with BMW once again at the forefront of these artistic exchanges.
