BMW’s Powerful 4WD M3s Get a Headlight Upgrade

With its new M3 saloon and M3 Touring models, BMW has upped the ante, providing even more power and upgraded features. While other regions enjoy the rear-wheel-drive M3 with 473 horsepower and a manual gearbox, the UK gets the most potent 4WD versions.

Both the M3 saloon and M3 Touring in the Competition versions now boast increased horsepower and acceleration. The saloon maintains its 0-62mph time of 3.5 seconds, and the Touring is a tenth of a second faster at 3.6 seconds. However, the real improvement is seen in their 0-124mph times, with the saloon now achieving this in just 11.8 seconds and the Touring in 12.4 seconds, half a second quicker than before.

This performance boost is thanks to an optimized digital engine control unit configuration, increasing power from 503bhp to a new high of 523bhp. The twin-turbo 3.0-litre straight-six engine now delivers 479 lb-ft of torque, offering even more ferocious and sustained power delivery, especially on the track.

Beyond the power enhancements, BMW has introduced new design elements. The most noticeable change is the new headlight design, which integrates low and high beams into a single module with arrow-shaped, vertically arranged LEDs. Inside, a new steering wheel, sophisticated materials for the instrument panel, version 8.5 of BMW’s Operating System, and new 19in/20in alloy wheels elevate the interior experience.

Despite these upgrades, the M3 saloon and M3 Touring retain their eight-speed automatic transmission, 4WD system, and driver assistance features. The cars also come with M-specific modes and a distinctive kidney grille. Prices in the UK start at £82,420 for the saloon and £84,700 for the estate.

While the UK versions are undeniably impressive, some enthusiasts might still long for the simpler, rear-wheel-drive variant with fewer horses and a manual gearbox. Nonetheless, the new 4WD M3s offer a blend of power, sophistication, and cutting-edge technology that is hard to match.
